Amaniel Tewelde, 37, ‘Disgusting’ predator manipulated and then raped vulnerable victim

Detectives have praised the bravery of the woman who came forward and helped put Amaniel Tewelde behind bars

The court heard Tewelde first met the woman in the Salford area in 2014 and then sexually assaulted her.

On another occasion, police said Tewelde ignored her pleas for him to stop touching her and went on to rape her.

He continued with controlling and coercive behaviour in the months that followed, threatening not to see her or care for her if she did not have sex with him.

Detectives said the woman feared for her life if she did not listen to him.

The court heard that, during a visit to Blackpool, Tewelde raped her again.

Det Sgt Graham Parry said: “Tewelde’s disgusting and manipulative actions led to a woman feeling unsafe and with nowhere to turn to, leaving her isolated.

“By alternating between caring and controlling, Tewelde left the woman feeling trapped and I am glad he is now finally behind bars where he belongs.”

He said after years of abuse the woman was “finally allowed a voice” in court after an “incredibly tough journey” and officers were “thankful for her perseverance”.

A ‘disgusting’ sexual predator has been jailed after he subjected his vulnerable victim to coercive and controlling behaviour before sexually assaulting and raping her.

Amaniel Tewelde, 37, from Salford, sexually attacked his terrified victim even after she told him to stop, according to Greater Manchester Police. Tewelde first met up with the woman in Salford and seriously sexually assaulted her despite his victim asking him to stop, according to detectives.

At a later date, a similar incident occurred. He began touching her but the woman feared how he would react if she refused. Tewelde ignored her appeals to stop and raped her, say police.

In the weeks and months that followed, Tewelde continued his ‘controlling and coercive behaviour’. She ended up fearing for her life, say detectives. He raped her once more in Blackpool, leaving the woman ‘withdrawn’ and without anyone to talk to.

But in September 2020 the woman went to GMP, prompting an investigation by the force’s Salford division.

Tewelde, of Gerald Road, Salford, had denied two counts of rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and perverting the course of justice but he was found guilty following a trial at in November. Now he has been handed a 15-year prison sentence at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester.

After the hearing, detectives praised the woman’s bravery in coming forward.

Detective Sergeant Graham Parry said: “Tewelde’s disgusting and manipulative actions led to a woman feeling unsafe and with nowhere to turn to, leaving her isolated.

“By alternating between caring and controlling, Tewelde left the woman feeling trapped and I am glad he is now finally behind bars where he belongs. I would like to commend DC Evans and DC Taylor, who have been instrumental in getting this case over the line.

“After years of suffering abuse at the hands of him, this woman was finally allowed a voice. She was listened to and got to tell her story in a court of law where justice could finally be served. This has been an incredibly tough journey for her, but we are all so thankful for her perseverance as this has allowed her to have a safer future for her and her family.

“I would urge anyone who has been the victim of any form of sexual abuse to get in touch with us. You will be listened to, we will investigate all reports, and we will do all we can to support you.”
