Scared thug who viciously attacked two sex workers has been handed a life sentence after cowering in his cell and refusing to come to court to hear his fate. Mohammed Nadeem Hussain, 26, erupted into violence without warning and launched horrific assaults after meeting the women in Cheetham Hill.
He tried to rape one of them and badly beat the other with both fearing they were going to be murdered. He was due to be sentenced on Thursday but refused to attend court from the prison where he was being held.
Her Honour Judge Hilary Manley adjourned the case to give him another chance to attend but he again refused. He was yesterday (Friday) sentenced in his absence to life in prison, with a minimum term of 12 years.
The attacks took place within minutes of each other in Cheetham Hill in the early hours of August 10, last year. One happened in a car park, the other in an alleyway.
Both women said at first he appeared ‘likeable and friendly’ and chatted with the pair, who both agreed to have consensual sexual relations with him for payment.
But Hussain turned violent ‘from seemingly nowhere’ and ‘delighted in the degrading and humiliating way that he treated them’, the court heard.
The first victim, known as Woman A, said she agreed to perform oral sex on Hussain for payment, but at one point he took her to the floor and then tried to rape her.
Prosecutors said she believed that Hussain began filming her with his mobile phone, and said ‘I’m raping this f****** bi***’. The attack lasted around 20 minutes, she said, before Hussain was ‘disturbed’ by a passer-by.
The second victim, known as Woman B, has since died from an unrelated illness, the trial was told. In a video interview given before her death, which was played to the jury, she said that Hussain demanded that she call him a ‘dirty rapist’ during the attack. She believed he was ‘revelling in what he was doing to her’.’
She was able to escape after pulling down Hussain’s trousers before ‘sprinting for her life’. Hussain claimed he had become involved in altercations with the women because he believed they were ‘trying to rip him off’.
But in October, the jury convicted him of attempted rape and assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH).
Following his sentence, Detective Sergeant Natasha Feerick, of GMP’s North Manchester CID, said: “Firstly, I must praise the bravery of the women coming forward, this case has been extremely tricky to navigate.
“The victims have often stated how they didn’t feel like they would be believed due to their work. The details alleged by the complainants revealed Hussain to be a man who revelled in their suffering and who took delight in degrading and humiliating them.
“Ultimately, regardless of their work or how the encounter began, the victims came forward because they, as with any other person, have autonomy over their bodies, and shouldn’t be subjected to sexual abuse. They wanted the man who violated them brought to justice.
“They hadn’t ever reported a sexual offence to the police before and one of the victims found it extremely traumatic to give evidence – it was very difficult to get her to come to court, which we understand is common with offences of this nature.
“Today’s sentencing is testament to the courage of these women coming forward. They have enabled us to put a dangerous offender behind bars and away from harming more women.
“As a team of officers, we want to get the message out there for victims to feel safe reporting crime to GMP. No matter what you do, or who you are, we will support you and treat you with the dignity you deserve and expect. If you talk to us, we will listen to you.”
Stacey Gosling, Senior Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West, said previously: “Mohammed Hussain clearly poses a danger to women. He carried out terrifying sexual and violent attacks upon two women within minutes of each other and degraded them further by calling them disgusting names as he did so.
“Sadly, one of the women died as a result of an unrelated illness before the trial, however we successfully applied to the court for permission to present her video interview to the jury. After careful consideration of all the evidence, the jury have found Hussain guilty of carrying out the attacks.
“The law on consent is clear: consenting on one occasion does not mean you consent to every occasion. Every individual has the right to withdraw consent to sexual activity at any time they choose. The CPS is committed to bringing offenders who commit crimes against women to justice.”
