The paedophile known as Jason Singh, aged 23, previously from Tyseley but now of Derby, admitted breaching a sexual harm prevention order

A man who got an underage girl pregnant amid a ‘huge’ age gap has avoided jail. Jason Singh was told he should be ‘disgusted’ with himself by a judge.

The 23-year-old, previously from Tyseley but now of Warner Street, Derby, admitted two counts of breaching a sexual harm prevention order (SHPO). But because he had complied with the terms of a deferred sentence, including not to have contact with the girl, he was spared immediate imprisonment at Birmingham Crown Court on Monday, September 2.

Instead, he was sentenced to 20 months suspended for 18 months, including 60 hours of unpaid work and 30 days of rehabilitation activity. Singh met the girl on Facebook and she initially told him she was 16 before later saying she was in fact 14. He was 21 at the time.

Singh was issued with a child abduction notice not to contact her before a SHPO was imposed at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court, which he went on to breach by having sexual activity with her. Judge Dean Kershaw said: “This is not a case of it being non-consensual. But this was a child, people of that age don’t know what full consent is.”

Addressing Singh directly he continued: “Jason Singh the age gap between you and (the girl) may not in terms of the number of years seem that many but it’s huge. I’m not satisfied, from what I have read, you truly believe how serious this situation is.

“Someone your age, 21 (at the time), who has got a 14/15-year-old girl pregnant is utterly disgraceful. Your family should be disgusted with you and in my view you should be disgusted with yourself.”

Judge Kershaw concluded Singh effectively ‘groomed’ the girl who would not have had the same ‘capacity as someone who is older’. But he acknowledged the defendant had stayed away from her as per the deferred sentence agreement, was working and ‘was otherwise leading a decent life’.

The five-year SHPO remains in place until 2028 banning him from unsupervised contact with anyone under the age of 16.
