A supporter of hate preacher Anjem Choudary who groomed a 15-year-old schoolgirl on Facebook is due to be sentenced today.
Mansoor Miah, of Hilgrove Road, Kilburn, used the social media website to invite the underage teenager to a hotel in Kent to have sex in November 2013.
The 21-year-old, who works as a sales assistant in Tesco in Brent Cross, also swapped lewd photos with the youngster and pleasured himself in front of the teen via webcam.
Southwark Crown Court heard the child’s mother was alerted after her daughter’s school reported online contact between the pupil and Miah.
A supporter of radical preacher Anjem Choudary has been spared jail after he admitted to grooming a 15-year-old girl on Facebook.
Mansoor Miah, 22, of Kilburn, north-west London, pleaded guilty to attempting to meet the underage girl for sex at a hotel in Kent in 2013.
When Miah first began speaking to the teenager, they originally spoke about Islam but he soon sent her explicit images and attempted to convince her to watch while he committed a sex act on a webcam.
The court heard how Miah got in contact with the girl after she set up a fake Facebook profile on a Nintendo DS video game device because her mother banned her from accessing the social networking site after she was found to be using it to discuss sex online.
Miah was arrested in June 2014 after the mother contacted police following on from being notified by her daughter’s school about the pair’s online activity.
At Southwark Crown Court, he received a prison sentence of 16 months suspended for two years. He was also ordered to attend a sex offenders’ treatment course and sign the sex offenders’ register for 10 years.
Upon sentencing, Judge Nicholas Loraine-Smith told Miah: “A suspended sentence is appropriate. A prison sentence to mark the seriousness of what you did, and a course of treatment to ensure it doesn’t happen again and to protect young girls.”
The judge added he would not have avoided a custodial sentence if he actually met up with the 15-year-old or displayed similar behaviour towards other girls.
He added: “You have not repeated this offence, so there is no evidence you are a predatory paedophile of the type I’m afraid we often see in this court, and the fact you didn’t try again allows me to accept you were remorseful for your behaviour months before the police intervened.”
Miah has also been banned from using social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter and chart rooms. He was found to be an avid fan of Choudary, retweeting several of his posts on Twitter, and is said to be an admirer of exiled radical cleric Omar Bakri Muhammad.
