Two Batley men are beginning lengthy prison sentences after they both sexually abused the same teenage victim.

The complainant, who first reported her allegations to the police back in 2018, was at Bradford Crown Court on Friday. August 9 to see Imran Tai, 45, and Jogee Mohammed, 52 jailed for nine years and four years respectively.

Prosecutor Ian Howard told the court how Tai, of Dark Lane, repeatedly had sex with the complainant, who must not be identified for legal reasons, while his friend Mohammed, of Stockwell Drive, also sexually abused the youngster after taking her in his car to the Showcase cinema complex car park at Birstall. In a victim impact statement read to the court by Mr Howard the complainant described being “torn to pieces” by what had happened to her.

The pair were convicted of their separate offending by a jury in May and the complainant indicated that it would have been much less painful for her if they had admitted their guilt rather than making “relive this nightmare”. Tai was found guilty of eight offences relating to his sexual activity with the girl while Mohammed was convicted of two allegations of sexual activity with a child relating to one day.

The court heard that Tai, who is now at HMP Leeds, had health issues which had resulted in him losing most of his vision and being dependant on a wheelchair. His barrister Timothy Jacobs said Tai had to rely on others in the prison system to take him from place to place and he also needed assistance with washing, dressing and feeding.

Mohammed’s barrister Ian Cook said his client, who is also in custody at HMP Leeds, had been a well respected man in his community, but much of that respect had now gone following his conviction.

Judge Colin Burn told the pair that the victim had suffered “serious and irreversible” psychological damage and said Tai had exploited a vulnerable complainant. The judge noted that Tai had not expressed any remorse and still denied all the offending.

Both defendants will now have to register as sex offenders with the police for life and they must also comply with indefinite sexual harm prevention orders and restraining orders.
