Mohammed Elmi Mahamed was found guilty of rape after a trial at Sheffield Crown Court

A man who preyed on a woman after she had lost her friends on a night out and raped her has been jailed.

Mohammed Elmi Mahamed, 33, has been jailed for six years and nine months at Sheffield Crown Court after he was found guilty of raping the 19-year-old woman on New Year’s Day this year.

Mahamed, formerly of Princess Street in Barnsley, approached his victim at a taxi rank in Barnsley town centre. She had been out celebrating the New Year with friends but had lost them earlier in the evening. Evil Mahamed told the woman he would take her to her friends but instead took her to a location where he attacked.

The brave woman was able to flee and ran back into the town centre, where she found one of her friends and told them what had happened. Mahamed was identified through CCTV enquiries and was arrested a day later.

DC Becky Robinson, of Barnsley CID, said: “Our victim was alone and intoxicated, which made her vulnerable and Mahamed deliberately targeted her because of this. He told her he would take her to her friends, but this was a lie. Instead, he led her to another location where she was subjected to a horrific sexual offence.”

“We were able to quickly identify Mahamed from CCTV enquiries and he was arrested the following day, before being charged and remanded in custody until his trial this week.

“Mahamed refused to admit his crimes and therefore the victim has had to give evidence before a jury in court, which in itself is a daunting experience. I wish to commend the victim for her strength throughout our investigation.”
